I read an article from bbc, that talked about the advantages and disadvantages of self-distribution.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/filmmaking/guide/distribution/distribution
Advantages:
- You can retain full control and rights over your own film, giving you the choice to select where you film should be screened.
- You don't have to pay any of the money you make from the sales of the film to a professional distributor.
Disadvantages:
- It can be a full-time job to self-distribute your film and can be very time-consuming.
- It may limit your options for sales as professional distributors have connections with buyers and therefore will know the market better
- You need to be sure that you are doing everything correct legally speaking, so you are certain to have all the rights for your film
Below there is a link to an article from the guardian, where Marcus Markou decided to self-distribute his film "Papadopoulos & Sons".
